Georgian women’s volleyball team searching for answers heading into holiday break

New year, new results?

The Georgian women’s volleyball team will be looking for a fresh start in 2025, after only winning two of their first 11 games this season.

The Grizzlies are currently ninth in the 10-team Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) east division, with both of their victories coming against the winless Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont.

Georgian has failed to win more than one set against any other team this year.

The top eight schools in each division qualify for the post-season in February, meaning the Grizzlies are still within shouting distance of a playoff spot.

Georgian also has one of the youngest teams in the OCAA, as more than half of the roster (7 of 12 players) are in their first-year of collegiate volleyball.

One of the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing start to the season has been the play of freshman libero Cassidy McClenaghan from Whitby, Ont. McClenaghan has featured in every Georgian match this season and is eighth in the OCAA in digs per set with 3.33.

Meanwhile, first-year Patrycja Sajda from Scarborough, Ont., leads the team in kills per set with 2.42, placing her nineteenth in the entire league.

Volleyball games consist of individual sets to 25 points, and the first team to take three sets wins the match.

The Grizzlies don’t play again until Jan. 8, when they play host to George Brown College, who won the first matchup between the schools earlier this year by a score of 3-0.
