I still enjoy living in my own home, but every winter seems a little more difficult. Snow removal is becoming a challenge, especially when we get several storms close together and the snow service won’t clear the sidewalk. What help is available in Barrie?
One of the keys to remaining independent at home is recognizing the things you don’t have to do yourself.
And in Barrie, shovelling snow may be near the top of that list. Additionally, I propose we officially recognize the word “windrow” as a curse word.
The best time to figure out your winter plan isn’t during the first big snowfall—it’s before it arrives.
Start with the people around you. A neighbour, family members or friends may be perfectly happy to lend a hand if they know it’s needed. Barrie residents can also explore Snow Angels Canada, which connects people who need help clearing snow with volunteers in their community.
If you need something more dependable throughout the winter, consider arranging a paid snow-removal service before the season begins. Ask whether they clear just the driveway or also walkways and entrances, how quickly they respond after a snowfall, and what happens after the City’s plow fills the end of your driveway.
But think beyond the shovel.
Winter can also make getting groceries, attending appointments and simply getting out to see other people more difficult. Planning transportation, deliveries and regular social connections can be just as important as keeping the driveway clear.
