Mark Sutcliffe returns to city hall for four more years as mayor of Ottawa

Date:

Mark Sutcliffe will serve another four years as Ottawa’s mayor after defeating 13 challengers in Monday’s municipal election.

“I was very excited to get right back to work this morning,” Sutcliffe wrote in a post on Wednesday.

Sutcliffe took 44.65 per cent of the vote. Outgoing Kitchissippi councillor Jeff leiper finished second with 33.9 per cent, followed by economist Neil Saravanamuttoo at 11 per cent and homebuilder Alex Lawson at 7.6 per cent.

“I’m grateful to have received the support of residents from across the city for my detailed plan to move Ottawa forward.”

Sutcliffe campaigned on improving transit and infrastructure, and on leveraging his experience to make sure Ottawa isn’t “left behind” by federal plans.

He said his focus is now delivering his plan to keep “Ottawa affordable.”

Sutcliffe’s share of the vote fell from 2022, when he won his first term with 51.4 per cent.

The city saw the second-lowest voter turnout since amalgamation, where just over 36 per cent, or 314,393 out of 868,248 of Ottawa’s eligible voters casted their ballot.

Only 2003 was lower, where only 33 per cent of eligible voters showed up to the polling station.

The city is also seeing three new members, alongside 21 returning incumbents.

Former journalist Joanne Chianello won Kitchissippi with 65 per cent of the vote, taking the seat Leiper gave up to run for mayor.

In Kanata South, Erin Coffin unseated incumbent Allan Hubley.

Chelsea Walton won the open seat in Stittsville, where Glen Gower did not seek re-election.
