Following his swearing-in at Rideau Hall on Friday, the new prime minister of Canada Mark Carney appointed his cabinet, which is about half the size of his predecessor’s and had some changes in store for Ottawa MPs in the Liberal caucus.
Longtime Ottawa South MP David McGuinty was sworn in again as minister of public safety emergency preparedness, a role he first took on during Trudeau’s last cabinet shuffle in December.
Meanwhile, Jenna Sudds, MP for Kanata-Carleton, was shuffled out of cabinet and will no longer be serving as minister of families, children and social development. Instead, her file has been absorbed by Steven MacKinnon’s portfolio, leaving him minister of jobs and families. He was previously minister of employment, workforce development and labour.
In total, there will be 23 ministers around Carney’s cabinet table, excluding the new prime minister, which marks a significant decrease from the 38 cabinet members that, until Friday, served under Trudeau.
Other Ottawa MPs Yasir Naqvi (Ottawa Centre), Chandra Arya (Nepean), Marie-France Lalonde (Orleans), Anita Vandenbeld (Ottawa West-Nepean), and Mona Fortier (Ottawa-Vanier-Gloucester), all Liberals, remain without portfolio.
The outlier, Carleton riding has been held by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre since 2004.
