Welcome to November and the time change

I hope most of you were able to vote, and I would like to welcome our new councillors as we prepare to begin a new term.

I would like to comment on the Successful Aging Expo, held on Oct. 29 at Mapleview Church and organized by the Barrie CARP Chapter, with sponsorship from Superior Home Health Care.

The event was both professional and inviting, featuring interesting presentations and nearly 60 booths showcasing senior products and companies that meet the needs of older adults. I heard many compliments from attendees and look forward to next year’s event.

I also heard many sad stories from attendees who visited our Seniors Housing Alliance booth. Seniors shared their concerns about the lack of affordable housing options beyond expensive seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities. Everyone I spoke with was positive about the need for our “Creative Options for Aging Well” initiative.

When you consider that the median monthly income for Ontario seniors is $2,600, while the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranges from $1,800 to $2,300, it is easy to understand why more affordable housing options are needed.

I would also like to highlight the Golden Buddies Program, offered by CFS Counselling and Wellbeing at 20 Anne St. S. in Barrie. This social club provides opportunities to build meaningful friendships, recognizing that making friends can be challenging at any age.

Through a variety of activities, older adults are invited to make “Golden Friends.” Activities may include waterfront walks, bowling, billiards, flower arranging, pottery painting, pizza parties, karaoke and more.

All activities are offered free of charge. Registration is required, and participants must arrange their own transportation. You can sign up for any or all activities to have fun, get connected and meet new friends.

For more information or to register, please contact Jenna Wickens at [email protected].

I hope our weather continues to be mild, and I wish everyone good health.
