Residents to receive new waste collection carts this summer

Date:

Barrie residents will soon receive new waste collection carts as the city prepares to shift to an automated curbside system designed to improve efficiency.

Starting June 16 and continuing through the end of August, each residential property will receive two free new carts, a 120-litre green organics cart and a 240-litre black garbage cart. The new system will officially begin on September 8.

In a media release, Stephanie Mack, Associate Director of Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability, said the new system will make waste collection in Barrie more efficient.

“We’re rolling out a more efficient way to collect waste in the city through automated cart collection, beginning this September,” she said.

“Carts are designed to make it easier to get waste to the curb, eliminate heavy lifting and dragging, and keep waste better protected from weather and animals.”

The automated collection service will use trucks equipped with mechanical arms that lift
and empty the carts, reducing the need for manual labour and enhancing worker safety.

The carts have been designed to easily move and help contain waste, keeping neighbourhoods cleaner and deterring pests. The organics cart has a gravity lock that opens automatically during collection.

Recycling will remain unchanged as it continues to be managed separately by Circular Materials under Ontario’s Blue Box Regulation. Residents can keep using their existing blue and grey bins for recyclables.
