Preparations for Boots and Hearts Barn Burner charity hockey game ‘coming along amazingly,’ says Mayor Nuttall

Date:

The puck is getting ready to drop for the 18th annual Boots and Hearts Barn Burner charity hockey game, and according to Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall, everything is shaping up well.

“Things are coming along amazingly,” he said.

“We’re getting everything ready, we have a lot of support, and we’re pushing forward — there’s a lot of excitement growing for this year’s game.”

The event hits the ice on Aug. 6 at Sadlon Arena, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and puck drop set for 7 p.m.

The annual game raises money for several local organizations, including Royal Victoria  Regional Health Centre (RVH), Easter Seals, the Rotary Club of Barrie and PIE Education.  Nuttall has hosted the event since 2018.

Last year’s Barn Burner raised $408,352, which made it the most successful edition to date. Nuttall said the event continues to bring out Barrie’s sense of community. “I think the whole city comes together in a big way — it’s community spirit,” he said. “This is a marquee event for Barrie. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised each year for some great organizations. The city looks forward to the Barn Burner and all the good it does. It’s  a big win across the board.”

Local realtor and sponsorship coordinator Andre Jmourko said momentum for this year’s event is strong, and planning has been improved to improve the experience.

“We’ve taken the time to really tighten up how we run the event — from organizing to the overall fan experience — and it’s paying off,” he said.

“We’ve already surpassed last year’s fundraising numbers, and more sponsors are still coming in. The team this year has been amazing.”

Behind the scenes, Jmourko said the focus has been on ensuring the funds raised deliver long-term impact for the organizations.

“We’re putting a big focus on supporting RVH’s expansion this year and beyond and giving back more to local charities and community groups,” he said.

“It’s important to us that this event has a lasting impact beyond just game day. We’re  encouraging more people to get involved and give back.”

NHL stars Isaak Phillips of the Winnipeg Jets, John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs and  Erik Gudbranson of the Columbus Blue Jackets are among the players confirmed for this year’s game.
