The Georgian College men’s hoops team has been rewarded for their blazing hot start to the calendar year, as they’re now rated among the top 10 schools in Canada.
In the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) latest national rankings, which are updated every Tuesday, the Grizzlies climbed to tenth place, up two spots from last week’s poll.
It’s also the highest ranking Georgian has received all season.
The Grizzlies have won each of the five games they’ve played in 2025, extending the team’s current win streak to eight. With only three regular season games remaining, Georgian’s 15-2 record put them second in the Ontario east division, trailing only the undefeated Durham College.
Durham is one of two teams to defeat Georgian this year, along with Seneca College, both of which came in road games for the Grizzlies.
Georgian will look to avenge the loss when they host Durham on Feb. 4.
Humber College currently tops the Ontario west division, where they’ve matched Durham’s 15-0 start to the season. The latest CCAA poll also ranked Humber as the number one school in the country.
Georgian’s strong season-long performance can largely be attributed to the team’s depth. Sophomore Trey Wilson (Barrie, Ont.) is the only Grizzly in the top 25 of provincial scoring, as he has averaged 15.1 points per game. No other Georgian player has averaged more than 12.5 points per outing.
However, Georgian boasts some of the most efficient shooters in Ontario college basketball. Jason Sache (Kanata, Ont.), a second-year guard has been lethal for the Grizzlies coming off the bench, as he’s posted 12.1 points per game while shooting 61.3 per cent, the second-best rate in the province.
Meanwhile, fellow hotshot Alberto Lopez (Dominican Republic) leads all collegiate players with his three-point shooting percentage of 45.2 per cent, an especially impressive feat considering his 6-foot-6 frame.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a matchup with Seneca at Michele McConney Court in Barrie on Jan. 31, while the regular season will come to an end on Feb. 8.
Georgian has already clinched a berth in the postseason, and they can guarantee themselves at least the second seed if they beat Seneca on Friday. The Grizzlies also have an outside chance of taking the division’s top spot if they win all three of their remaining games, and Durham drops two of its last three.
If Georgian ends up in the second seed, they will draw the seventh seed in the province’s west division for the first postseason game, which will likely come against Lambton College, Conestoga College, or Fanshawe College, all of whom would be underdogs against the Grizzlies.
The Georgian basketball community remains in mourning after the passing of Allan Cox, who was in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the men’s team when he succumbed to cancer in December.
