Fast break: Georgian women’s basketball team off to quick start

Date:

The Georgian women’s basketball squad has won five of its first six games, as it looks to rebound from a disappointing finish to last year’s season.

The Grizzlies have had convincing wins over Durham, Seneca, and Centennial, while they’ve also beaten George Brown in both meetings between the schools this year.

The only loss came during a road game against top-seeded Algonquin, which remains the only undefeated team in Ontario collegiate basketball this season.

Algonquin also led this week’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial rankings, in which the Grizzlies placed fourth, maintaining their spot from the previous week.

Humber and Lambton rounded out the top four, though both teams play in the west division and, as such, won’t square off against the Grizzlies during the regular season.

Georgian is looking to avenge an underwhelming exit in last year’s playoffs, in which they lost at home to Fanshawe in the first round of the postseason.

Leading this year’s squad is first-year Sydney Shawyer from Horseshoe Valley, Ont. The 5-foot-11 forward is averaging 12.8 points per game in her first season of collegiate hoops, placing her fifteenth in the provincial scoring race.

Shawyer’s performance has been even more impressive considering she’s come off the bench for all but one of Georgian’s games this year, highlighted by a 23 point performance during the Grizzlies’ win over Centennial.

Lily Roberts-Neef (St. Thomas, Ont.), Ami May (Raymond, Alta.), and Daija Thompson (Whitby, Ont.) are all also averaging more than 10 points per game this season.

Next up, the Grizzlies have back-to-back home games against Loyalist and St. Lawrence this Friday and Saturday, which will be their final games of the calendar year.

The collegiate basketball season hits pause for most of December before picking back up in January.
