Ontario men, Nova Scotian women victors of curling club championships in Barrie

Date:

Teams from Nova Scotia and Ontario have won Everest Canadian Curling Club Championships, which was held at the Barrie Curling Club last week.

The nail-biting final game of the women’s division saw Nova Scotians Julie McEvoy, Abby Miller, Kathleen Conrod, Mary Mason and skip Michelle Miller take on Sara Spafford, Emily Best, Janique LeBlanc and skip Amanda Power of Prince Edward Island.

Despite Miller’s team being heavily favoured at the outset of the competition, it lost two of the six games played in the round robin portion of the event. Power’s team, however, was undefeated heading into the final. After falling behind in the first end, the Nova Scotians tied the game in the penultimate eighth end and eked out a 10-9 victory.

In the final game in the men’s division, skip Jordan Keon led Trevor Talbott, Curtis Samoy and Ryan Werenich to a 7-3 victory over Jack Hykaway, Joshua Harding, Graham Normand, Andrew Peck and skip Zachary Wasylik of Manitoba. The Ontario men’s team  finished the competition with an unblemished 6-0 record. It is the fourth year in a row that an Ontario team featuring Keon has won the competition.

In an interview before his final games had been played, he told the Barrie Compass that the standard of play had been high at the competition and that we wasn’t expecting to come out the victor. “The [Barrie Curling Club] has put together a great championship.”

The winning teams will both compete against the winners of a similar American competition in September. Both teams will also compete at an invitational event against Curling Canada’s national teams.
