Break out the brooms: Barrie Jr. Sharks look to sweep first-round series

Barrie’s under-22 women’s hockey team will be looking to make it three-consecutive playoff wins, when they host the Nepean Wildcats this weekend. 

The Jr. Sharks won both games played in the nation’s capital last weekend, giving Barrie a 2-0 edge in the first-round series between the squads.

The teams are set to square off on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the East Bayfield Community Centre, but the Jr. Sharks can wrap up the series by winning any of the three games.

Barrie notched a 33-9-2 record in the regular season, leaving them sixth in the Ontario Women’s Hockey League’s (OWHL) red division and giving them home-ice advantage in their first round against Nepean.

The Jr. Sharks, who joined the OWHL in 2011, have never won a league championship. 

Barrie has been led this season by 16-year-old Kate Stuart, who scored 31 points in 42 games. Stuart also scored in Barrie’s 2-1 shootout win over Nepean on Sunday.

The Jr. Sharks have also received stellar netminding this year from goalies Avah Sedore and Amelia Wilkinson, who combined for 13 shutouts this year.
