Barrie receives provincial funding for major south-end road and infrastructure projects

Date:

Construction is set to begin on several major road and infrastructure projects in south Barrie.

The projects include the expansion of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street, and the installation of new trunk sewer and watermain systems along Huronia and McKay Roads.

Work on Mapleview Drive East is expected to start in November 2025 and be completed by spring 2028, while the Yonge Street expansion is scheduled to begin next spring. Both projects will involve widening the roads, upgrading intersections – including Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive – reconstructing St. Paul Crescent, and adding trails and sidewalks.

Construction on the new Huronia and McKay trunk sewer and watermain system is set to begin this fall and wrap up in spring 2028. The project includes installing a new watermain on McKay Road East, new trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads, and widening Huronia Road.

The Ontario government is contributing $53.4 million in funding through its Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program. That includes $18.5 million for the Mapleview and Yonge Street expansion and $34.9 million for the trunk sewer and watermain work.

Mayor Alex Nuttall thanked the province for its support, saying the investment will help Barrie meet its growing needs.

“Investing in infrastructure is investing in Barrie’s future,” he said.

“These projects will support new homes and businesses while making it easier for residents to get where they need to go.”

Barrie–Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin said the projects will strengthen local infrastructure and benefit the community.

“These projects will ensure we’re improving local infrastructure, building stronger communities and opening up new opportunities for people to live, work and raise their family in Barrie– Innisfil,” she said.

Barrie–Springwater–Oro-Medonte MPP Doug Downey said the investments are essential as the region continues to grow.

“These investments will ensure the south end of Barrie continues to grow to meet the needs of residents and businesses,” Downey said.

Road and infrastructure upgrades have ramped up across Barrie, with the city investing $100 million in major projects. Some recent work includes the Sophia trunk storm sewer at Owen Street and Sophia Street East, the Queen’s Park A1 neighbourhood reconstruction program, and Bayview Drive transportation improvements.

Residents should expect increased traffic impacts in the city’s south-end during the construction period.
