Barrie’s economy is about to get a fresh coat of paint — and it’s 350,000 square feet wide.
Sherwin-Williams is building a new 350,000-square-foot distribution centre along Dunlop Street West, just west of Ferndale Drive North. Once operational, the facility is expected to create up to 200 jobs.
A large sign along Dunlop Street West indicates the distribution centre is coming soon.
Deputy Mayor Robert Thomson, who represents the area, told Compass News the project is a significant investment in the city’s local economy.
“It’s fantastic. This investment in our city is a significant step forward, and it’s great to see more local jobs being created for our residents,” he said.
“City council has been working to create the right environment to attract more jobs and investment to Barrie. It’s encouraging to see those opportunities coming into our own backyard — where people live. It strengthens our sense of community and reduces commute times, giving residents more time with their families.”
Ward 8 Coun. Jim Harris also welcomed the announcement, calling the company a strong addition to Barrie’s growing industrial base.
“It’s wonderful to see a major company like Sherwin-Williams choosing Barrie and bringing new jobs to our community,” he said.
Established in 1866 in Cleveland, Ohio, Sherwin-Williams has grown into the largest paint and coatings company in North America. The company operates more than 5,000 stores worldwide and employs approximately 64,000 people globally.
Compass News reached out to Sherwin-Williams for comment but did not receive a response by publication time. An opening date for the distribution centre has not yet been announced.
