Diana Fox Carney door knocking for husband in Nepean

Date:

Nepean voters might have seen a familiar face stumping for their local Liberal candidate.

Diana Fox Carney, the spouse of the prime minister, is out door-knocking in the southwest Ottawa riding, the Liberal party confirmed to iPolitics.

A Liberal source said Ms. Carney has been a real help on the campaign as she has made the rounds in the riding.

Mark Carney, who took over the helm of the Liberals last month, has been a bit distracted running the national campaign to stump in Nepean, which the party has held since 2015. He was named the party’s candidate shortly before the election call after the Liberals disqualified Chandra Arya from running again under their banner.

While the Carneys have never resided in Nepean, the couple have lived in Ottawa for decades, save for a respite in the U.K. when Mr. Carney served as the governor of the Bank of England.

Carney has also pointed to ties to the area because of his close friendship with people who do, including Peter Chiarelli, the former general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, who grew up in Nepean and went to Harvard University on a hockey scholarship when Carney did the same. The two were roommates there.

Carney stopped the riding late last month to officially open his campaign office. Ms. Carney was on hand and brought cupcakes from a local bakery for volunteers.
