This Week in Barrie: Week of June 2

City exploring creation of Conservation Trust

Mayor Alex Nuttall has signed an executive order to begin work on a Conservation Trust to
protect lands around Little Lake and other sensitive areas in Barrie. Staff will report back with a framework, budget, and list of lands by 2026.

The Trust would ensure these areas remain protected for future generations. The City is also asking residents which lands – such as Ardagh Bluffs or Sunnidale Forest – should be
considered.

Registration now open for 2025 Communities in Bloom campaign

The City of Barrie is inviting residents to take part in this year’s Communities in Bloom campaign by sharing photos of their gardening and beautification efforts. This year’s theme is edible gardens.

Residents, youth (aged 6 to 12), businesses, and community/school groups can participate in the following ways:

  • plant container projects, flowers or vegetable gardens, fruit trees or plants
  • create outdoor art projects that beautify our community
  • tidy up local landscapes and boulevards

Photos of projects can be submitted via the Communities in Bloom form by June 20, 2025.

To learn more about this initiative, visit barrie.ca/CommunitiesInBloom.

Owen Street closure shifts north starting June 6

The Sophia Trunk Storm Sewers project is progressing ahead of schedule. Starting Friday,
June 6, Owen Street will be closed from just north of Collier Street to south of McDonald Street, including the Worsley Street intersection. This closure is expected to remain in place until October 2025, weather permitting. Detours will be in place.

Thank you for your patience as this important work continues to reduce flooding risks
downtown.

Bayview Drive construction continues as project progresses

One-way southbound traffic access remains in place during this phase. Nearby properties have received a May 2025 bulletin with additional details.
