Large UPS operations facility coming to Barrie south

Date:

Barrie’s south end will be home to a new UPS operations facility that’s expected to bring jobs and boost the local economy.

Located at 90 Salem Rd., the 103,000-square-foot building will be five times the size of the company’s existing facility in Barrie. Plans include capacity for up to 90 delivery trucks as well as customer service space.

Barrie is projected to see major population growth over the next 25 years and an increased need for employment opportunities.

Mayor Alex Nuttall joined officials from UPS and the Sora Group, along with other invited guests, for the official groundbreaking ceremony.

“This new facility represents a significant investment in our community and will support long term economic growth,” he said.

“With 90 trucks running out of here, that means more jobs coming to Barrie – more parcels moving quicker, more industrial land being developed, and it will help keep our residential taxes lower.”

Two years after completing a major UPS facility in Hamilton, the Sora Group turned its focus to Barrie. Joe Hamadi, president of Sorbarrie Developments Inc., said his team is grateful for the city’s support in fast-tracking the project.

“This fast-track project has been made possible thanks to the outstanding collaboration and support from the City of Barrie,” he said.

“Having worked and invested here for more than 20 years, we’re thrilled to continue that commitment with a $25-million investment in the city.”

Sean Griffin, president of UPS Canada, said Barrie’s growth makes it an ideal location for expansion.

“As Barrie continues to grow, so does the need for reliable, efficient logistics – and we’re proud to be investing in the infrastructure that will support that growth,” he said.

“This new centre will help us better serve our customers and strengthen our network in one of Ontario’s most dynamic regions.”

Construction is expected to be completed by October 2026.
