Georgian men’s basketball team to compete in provincial championship

Date:

Georgian College’s men’s basketball team is two wins away from making history.

The Grizzlies took down Sheridan College last weekend and qualified for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship, which features the final four teams in provincial hoops.

Georgian will travel to Toronto this weekend, where the OCAA championship will be hosted by Humber College. The Grizzlies will square off against the host team on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

It will be the first meeting between the two schools this year.

Humber, the defending provincial champions, will be heavy favourites heading into the match-up. The Hawks are currently working on an undefeated campaign, posting an 18-0 record in the regular season and winning both their playoff games by 30-plus points.

In the most recent national rankings, Humber was listed as the best team in Canada, while Georgian placed ninth.

The Grizzlies have never won an Ontario title, nor have they ever medalled. If they get past Humber, a program with a record 16 provincial championships, Georgian will be guaranteed a medal and play in the first championship game in school history. If Humber wins, the Grizzlies will play in the bronze medal game against the loser of the other semifinal between St. Clair and Durham.

The Ontario gold medallist will automatically qualify for the national championship, hosted by Vanier College next month in Saint-Laurent, Que.

Meanwhile, the Georgian women’s team lost in the provincial quarterfinals last weekend, falling to Mohawk College by a score of 65-51.
