Gee-Gees make early playoff exit after falling to Windsor

Date:

The Ottawa Gee-Gees are out of the hunt for the Vanier Cup.

Ottawa was bounced out of the Ontario University Athletics football playoffs on Saturday, dropping a first-round contest to the Windsor Lancers 31-24.

The Lancers, who beat the Gee-Gees in the regular season, will next face off against the Queen’s Gaels in the semi-finals, with a spot in the Yates Cup finals on the line.

The winner of the Yates Cup will compete in the Mitchell Bowl this year against the Canada West champion for a spot in the Vanier Cup, the country’s college football championship.

The Gee-Gees have won the Vanier Cup twice, most recently in 2000.

The Gee-Gees had an up-and-down regular season, losing four of their last six games, including falling to cross-town rival Carleton for the first time in six years.

But their 4-4 record was good enough for the fifth-seed in the conference.

Carleton narrowly missed out on the final playoff spot at 3-5. Guelph, who had an identical record but won the tie-breaker, pulled off a major upset over Western to win a spot in the OUA semi-finals.
