Construction begins on seniors home redevelopment in Barrie

Date:

Shovels are in the ground as construction gets underway on the redevelopment of the IOOF Seniors Home in Barrie.

The project will add 130 modern long-term care beds and expand services for local seniors.

Located at 10 Brooks St., the redevelopment is receiving provincial support through Ontario’s Capital Funding Program and is part of the government’s plan to expand long-term care.

The IOOF Seniors Home campus connects residents to a range of health services and supports, including care for chronic conditions, cognitive impairments, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy, and pastoral programs.

Several dignitaries, including Mayor Alex Nuttall, Barrie–Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin, Ontario’s Long-Term Care Minister Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, and IOOF Seniors Homes CEO Garry C. Hopkins, attended the groundbreaking event.

“Today marks a significant milestone for Barrie. Once construction is complete, 130 residents will have a new home where they can receive the care they need, when they need it,” Kusendova-Bashta said.

The redevelopment adds 64 new and 66 upgraded beds, bringing the total to 226. The home will feature eight resident areas for up to 32 people each, with dining, lounges, activity spaces, and private bedrooms.

Nuttall welcomed the investment, calling it a critical addition for the community.

“This investment will deliver 130 new and modernized long-term care beds for Barrie, helping ensure seniors receive the quality care they deserve,” he said.

“Thank you to the Province of Ontario for supporting this important project for our community.” Khanjin said the redevelopment strengthens local access to care.

“The IOOF campus of care plays a vital role in connecting local seniors with the supports they need, close to family and loved ones,” she said.

The project supports Ontario’s plan to add 58,000 long-term care beds. As of January 2026, the province has reported that nearly 26,000 beds are complete, under construction, or approved.

Construction will be completed in two phases, with residents moving in spring 2028 and early 2029.
