Barrie Public Library CEO Lauren Jessop is welcoming the next chapter in the city’s library expansion efforts with the announcement of a new branch planned as part of a mixed-use recreation complex.
On June 5, Mayor Alex Nuttall and two members of council announced plans for the new complex, to be built on a 100-acre site near McKay Road East and Huronia Road. The project marks the first major step in 18 years toward delivering a recreation centre for Barrie’s southeast end.
Jessop called the long-awaited news a positive step forward.
“This project has been years in the making, and we’re thrilled to be moving forward with a purpose-built library in Barrie’s growing south end,” she said.
Jessop said incorporating the new library branch into the recreation complex is a logical fit, as it will offer residents access to a wide range of services and resources.
“By co-locating with the new recreation facility, this dynamic hub will offer residents of all ages a vibrant space that supports literacy, leisure, and learning,” she said.
“With a larger footprint, we’ll have the flexibility to design innovative services and inspiring spaces that reflect the needs and aspirations of our expanding community.”
A construction start date on the complex and library has not yet been announced.
Jessop also provided an update on the next planned library branch in Barrie’s northwest Letitia Heights neighbourhood.
“Things are progressing with Northwest Barrie as well. The City of Barrie’s corporate facilities team has been given permission to negotiate a lease agreement in the Letitia Heights area on our behalf,” she said.
“We’re excited to get moving on this project, too.”
She added more updates on the selected location for the northwest branch would be coming soon.
