Man arrested at library

A 61-year-old man has been arrested and charged after detectives investigated reports of a man who “acted inappropriately” at the downtown branch of the Barrie Public Library, Barrie Police have said in a news release.

He was held for a bail hearing and has since been remanded into custody. Police have shared that the accused shared a handwritten letter consisting of “inappropriate requests” with a male teen at the library. 

The victim immediately reported the incident. There is a court-imposed publication ban.

Shoplifter arrested

On May 19 at approximately 10:40 a.m. an officer on general patrol near Bayfield and Wellington Streets observed an argument between two people at a nearby business.

The officer learned that a man left the store with a number of items without paying. The man, 26, was placed under arrest for theft under $5,000 and was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters.

It was then learned that the now accused had falsely identified himself and was then charged for obstructing police.

All the stolen items were recovered and the accused was held in custody.

Arrest made in Mayfair Drive assault

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to an assault on Mayfair Drive last week. He has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon of dangerous purpose. 

He was arrested exiting a bus in the downtown core.

The assault took place on May 6 when a woman was assaulted by a stranger as the passed on the sidewalk.

Suspect arrested for theft

A 61-year-old man has been arrested after reports that a man was breaking into a boat and breaking the windows of two vehicles parked on the property.

He is in custody and the stolen property was recovered. He was charged with theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and breach of probation.

Stunt driver charged; motorcycle impounded

Barrie police charged a 49-year-old driver from Barrie for travelling at 131 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre-per-hour zone. He was charged with speeding and stunt driving, has had his motorcycle impounded for 14 days and license suspended for 30 days.
