Barrie church initiative brings transitional housing project to community

Date:

Mapleview Community Church is stepping up by launching a transitional housing project aimed at supporting Barrie residents experiencing homelessness and housing uncertainty.

The project will feature a three-storey building with 31 bachelor units, including five fully accessible apartments. Residents will have access to wraparound supports such as mental health services, job-readiness programs and spiritual care.

The development, located at 300 Mapleview Dr. W. on church property in the city’s southwest end, was announced with Mayor Alex Nuttall, councillors Clare Riepma, Craig Nixon and Nigussie Nigussie, and Pastor Jay Davis in attendance. The city is contributing $3.05 million in grant funding toward the project.

Nuttall said the initiative is about more than housing.

“Every person deserves a safe and stable place to call home,” he said.

“This project provides more than shelter — it offers hope and security to those who need it most.” He added the need for affordable housing in Barrie is vital.

“This is a massive need in this moment. We haven’t seen this type of development when it comes to affordable housing in our city that we’ve needed over the years,” he said.

Davis said the project reflects the church’s mission to serve the community. “As a church, we are called to serve our community and meet people where they are,” he said.

“This transitional housing initiative reflects our commitment to walking alongside those in need, helping them take steps toward healing, stability and permanent housing.”

Coun. Nigussie said he is encouraged by the partnership and its potential impact.

“These homes will provide stability for individuals and families in need while being delivered more efficiently than traditional models,” he said.

“Projects like this show the progress we can achieve when council works with community partners to strengthen Barrie.”

The development is being undertaken in partnership with nonprofit housing provider Hollyhomes Corp. Ltd.
