Atlético Ottawa off to quick start in Canadian Premier League season

Date:

Ottawa’s professional soccer team is undefeated through the first three games of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) season, leaving them tied atop the table.

After drawing their opening game against the Halifax Wanderers, Ottawa took down Vancouver FC 4-1, and then beat the Toronto-based York United 3-2 over the weekend.

Atlético is one of three CPL teams yet to have dropped a match, alongside the Wanderers and Hamilton’s Forge FC.

The club has been led by 22-year-old David Rodríguez, who has potted two goals in the team’s first three games. Rodríguez, originally from San Luis, Mexico, is playing his first season in the nation’s capital, as he’s currently on loan from his hometown club Atlético San Luis, which plays in the top Mexican league.

Atlético currently leads all CPL teams in goals scored, as well as shots on target.

It’s been a strong start under the tutelage of Diego Mejía, who took over as Ottawa’s manager earlier this year. Mejía, who had a 15-year career as a midfielder in Mexico, was hired by Atlético after spending the last year coaching FC Juárez in the Mexican league.

Mejía will be looking to help Ottawa improve upon last-year’s result, when they were bounced by Forge FC in the CPL semifinals. Atlético has never won a CPL championship in the franchise’s five-year history, though they placed runner-up in 2022, before losing at home to Forge.

Next up, Ottawa will travel to Calgary to take on Cavalry FC, which has yet to win a match this season.
