Affordable housing coming to new Barrie rental building

Date:

More affordable housing is on the way for Barrie, with 24 units set for a new rental development in the city’s southeast end.

The Library Residences, a seven-storey building at 60 Dean Ave., will be built next to the Barrie Public Library’s Painswick branch in the southeast end. The project will include 122 rental units in total, with 24 designated as affordable.

The development is a partnership between the City of Barrie and developer Pratt Homes. City council recently approved a policy waiving development charges on market-rate units in projects that include at least 20 per cent affordable housing.

Mayor Alex Nuttall, Coun. Sergio Morales and Pratt Homes owner Karen Hansen were on hand for the announcement.

“The Library Residences is exactly the kind of housing Barrie needs – well-designed and inclusive of truly affordable options,” Nuttall said.

“This project reflects the City’s commitment to unlocking municipal land for housing and shows what’s possible when private developers and public leadership work together.”

Hansen said Pratt Homes was proud to partner with the city for the project.

“This project reflects our commitment to building with connection and compassion,” she  said.

The building will also feature Barrie’s first privately owned public space (POPS), which will be open to both residents and the neighbourhood. Planned amenities include outdoor fire pits, a reading and sitting area, a book exchange and cellphone charging  stations.

Morales said the development will make a lasting impact on families.

“The purpose-built rental housing will give Barrie families at all stages of their lives another option to live in the community they want to live in,” he said.

“The POPS will enhance quality of life for future residents and the existing neighbourhood.”

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2025.
