Barrie Transit is shifting gears by adding a Transit ON Demand (ToD) service to three additional zones in the city’s south end, aiming to improve access for residents in Wards 7, 9, and 10.
Unlike traditional transit routes, the ToD system allows riders to plan rides without depending on fixed schedules. Trips with ToD can be arranged through a mobile app, online, or by phone, with service operating between designated bus stops within specific zones or connecting to the city’s main transit network.
The new service areas include Zone E, which will serve the Lally Terrace and Terry Fox Drive neighbourhoods; Zone F, covering the Madelaine Drive and Lockhart/Saunders Drive area — previously part of Zone D; and Zone H, which includes Mabern Street, Sundew Drive, and the King Street pocket.
Coun. Gary Harvey, who represents Ward 7, said the city’s on-demand transit service will be vital for residents who depend on public transportation.
“Transit ON Demand will be a game changer for the residents of Holly, as it will provide service to Mabern Street in the new subdivision at Essa Road and Salem Road, while also improving access for students attending Bear Creek High School and for those traveling to the King Street commercial area,” he said.
Barrie city staff will monitor rider feedback to make any necessary improvements.
