Dear Victoria,

We think Mom has reached the point where she needs long-term care, and we’re becoming concerned about how long she can safely remain at home. Do we start calling long-term care homes to see who has space?

This is a question families often don’t think about until the need becomes urgent — and Ontario’s long-term care system can be confusing when you’re encountering it for the first time.

The most important thing to know is that you don’t apply to individual long-term care homes.

Your starting point is Ontario Health atHome.

A care coordinator will work with you and your family, assess your loved one’s needs and determine which homes you would like to apply to — generally up to five. Ontario Health atHome will then coordinate the application and placement process.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t call or visit individual homes.

In fact, this is where doing some homework early can really help. Tour the homes you’re considering. Ask about daily life, activities, meals, specialized care and what residents can bring with them. Consider something equally important: Will family and friends be able to visit regularly?

Wait times can vary significantly between homes and according to individual circumstances and care needs. If your loved one’s health, safety or care needs change while you’re waiting, contact your Ontario Health atHome care coordinator. Be open about what’s happening so they have an accurate understanding of your family’s situation.

Don’t wait for a crisis to begin asking questions. Navigating unfamiliar waters is much harder when you’re already in one.

Learn about the process. Talk with your family. Tour some homes. Stay connected with your care coordinator.

Understanding your options today can make a difficult decision tomorrow a little easier.

Start here: Contact your local Ontario Health atHome office at 705-721-8010.

Dear Victoria,

I still enjoy living in my own home, but every winter seems a little more difficult. Snow removal is becoming a challenge, especially when we get several storms close together and the snow service won’t clear the sidewalk. What help is available in Barrie?

One of the keys to remaining independent at home is recognizing the things you don’t have to do yourself.

And in Barrie, shovelling snow may be near the top of that list. Additionally, I propose we officially recognize the word “windrow” as a curse word.

The best time to figure out your winter plan isn’t during the first big snowfall—it’s before it arrives.

Start with the people around you. A neighbour, family members or friends may be perfectly happy to lend a hand if they know it’s needed. Barrie residents can also explore Snow Angels Canada, which connects people who need help clearing snow with volunteers in their community.

If you need something more dependable throughout the winter, consider arranging a paid snow-removal service before the season begins. Ask whether they clear just the driveway or also walkways and entrances, how quickly they respond after a snowfall, and what happens after the City’s plow fills the end of your driveway.

But think beyond the shovel.

Winter can also make getting groceries, attending appointments and simply getting out to see other people more difficult. Planning transportation, deliveries and regular social connections can be just as important as keeping the driveway clear.

Not sure what services exist? 211 Ontario and the Barrie Public Library’s Community Information Directory are two excellent places to start looking.

Staying independent doesn’t mean doing everything yourself.

Sometimes it means having a good plan—before the snow starts falling.

Submitted by: Aaron Lutes, Director of Development, Victoria Village Inc.

Dear Victoria,

My mom is still living on her own and insists she is doing just fine. Lately, though, I have noticed little things that concern me. Nothing feels like a crisis mind you, but I think she may need some help. Where do I start?

This is exactly the kind of question that has inspired Dear Victoria.

Aging doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Families can suddenly find themselves navigating unfamiliar questions about health, finances, caregiving and independence — and sometimes, our situation leaves us wondering who to ask.

The good news is that you don’t need to solve everything all at once.

Start with a conversation.

Instead of beginning with what your mom can’t do, ask how things are going. Is anything becoming more difficult? What would make her day easier? Most importantly, what does she want?

And we should all become more comfortable asking for and accepting help ourselves. Needing a hand doesn’t necessarily mean giving up independence. Often, the right support helps us maintain it.

Look beyond the obvious physical needs, too. Someone may be managing the house and meals perfectly well but gradually becoming more isolated. Fewer outings, less social interaction or losing connections with friends and the community can be just as important to notice.

Sometimes the answer is practical help. Sometimes, it’s simply more connection.

And when you don’t know what comes next, ask.

That’s what we are going to strive to do with Dear Victoria: take real questions about aging and bring them to the people in Barrie who can help answer them.

Some questions are expected to be serious. Others will be surprisingly ordinary.

All of them are worth asking.

So, Barrie: What would you like to ask Victoria?
