Lease secured for Barrie’s newest library branch

Date:

The next step in expanding library services in Barrie is taking shape, with a lease secured for a new northwest branch.

Deputy Mayor Robert Thomson posted on Facebook that a lease has been finalized for a space at 420 Leacock Dr., in the Letitia Heights neighbourhood. The new Barrie Public Library branch will occupy the former O’Hara’s Public House, a unit of just under 2,500 square feet in the plaza.

Thomson, who represents the area on city council, said the new branch will have a positive impact on the community.

“It’s very exciting for the neighbourhood to see library services coming right where it’s needed. Libraries are more than books — they are places where children discover, students learn, and neighbours connect,” he said.

“This is not just about a building. It is about investing in people and making Barrie an even  better place to call home.”

Resident Catherine Virgo commented on Thomson’s post that she is thrilled about the news. “Congratulations to the council and the library board on this new step,” she wrote. “As financial commitments tighten, it’s good to have more opportunities available to families. Please let us know when the event will take place.”

Barrie Public Library CEO Lauren Jessop told Compass News she could not yet comment on  the finalized lease. However, in August she said the need for a branch in northwest Barrie is strong.

“There is a strong demand for a new library branch in northwest Barrie,” she said.

“We plan to use community input as guidance for the design of the space, the collections we purchase, and planned program offerings. The emphasis is on creating a highly efficient, multi-functional, welcoming and safe environment that maximizes every square foot to serve diverse age groups and interests.”

No date has been set for renovation work to begin. The new branch is expected to offer literacy support, programs, Wi-Fi, computers and community space.

In June, the city also announced another library branch will be included as part of the future southeast recreation complex.
