Advanced voting set to open in Osgoode city council byelection

Date:

Osgoode residents will have the opportunity to cast an early ballot in the upcoming municipal byelection on Friday, when advanced voting is set to open.

The election will determine who will succeed George Darouze on city council after he resigned earlier this year to run in the recent provincial election for the Progressive Conservatives. Darouze was elected in the riding of Carleton, where he carried more than 49 per cent of the vote share.

Former Osgoode mayor Doug Thompson, Greely Community Association president Isabelle Skalski, and project manager Jennifer van Koughnett are among the 11 registered candidates vying to replace Darouze.

Thompson, who represented the ward on city council from 2000 to 2014, also ran for the position in 2022, when he placed runner-up to Darouze by fewer than 250 votes.

Whoever is elected will only be Osgoode’s second councillor since 2014, as Darouze represented the ward for more than a decade. The successful candidate will also serve for less than two years before next year’s municipal elections, which are scheduled for Oct. 26, 2026.

Advanced voting will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Osgoode Village Community Centre, Parkway Church, and Carlsbad Springs Community Centre.

An additional five voting locations will open on June 16, byelection day, all of which can be found on the city’s website.
