Tree Watering Bag pick-up days on July 25 and August 1

Residents who received a new boulevard tree in 2025 or 2026 as part of the City’s replanting efforts following the 2025 ice storm can pick up a free tree watering bag to help their tree thrive. The City will distribute watering bags and instruction sheets at Sunnidale Park (265 Sunnidale Road) on Saturday, July 25 and Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents must provide their address to confirm eligibility and supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while quantities last.

Road closure notice: Short-term closure of Yonge Street

A full closure of Yonge Street between St. Paul’s Crescent and Mapleview Drive East will be in place from July 14 to July 17, 2026, to allow for a critical deep sanitary sewer connection. Work will take place continuously, 24 hours a day, to reduce the overall construction timeline and minimize traffic impacts. Through traffic will be detoured via St. Paul’s Crescent, with signed routes in place, while transit service will not be affected. This work is part of planned transportation improvements identified in the City’s Multi-Modal Active Transportation Master Plan to support growth to 2031.

Explore Barrie’s beaches this summer!

Lifeguards are on duty daily from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (weather-permitting) at Johnson’s and Centennial beaches for the summer season. When lifeguards are on duty, signs are posted, and buoy lines mark the designated supervised swimming areas. As in previous years, there is no supervision at any other waterfront locations. The Personal Floatation Device (PFD) loan program allows visitors to borrow PFDs for free at Centennial and Johnson’s beaches. The PFD loan service is an effective way to increase usage and promotes public education surrounding the value of properly fitted PFDs. Approximately 90% of drowning victims are found not wearing a lifejacket or PFD.

Tents or sunshades are not permitted at waterfront beaches or parks unless they are supported by no more than one pole and have no more than one wall or side. This helps keep sightlines clear and beaches safe for everyone.

Celebrate Canada’s birthday in Barrie with Canada Day On The Move!

Join the celebration on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, as Canada Day On The Move brings fun to neighbourhood parks and downtown. Enjoy free, family-friendly pop-ups at Lampman Lane Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Painswick Park from 3 to 6 p.m., featuring a wildlife show, face painting, buskers, games, inflatables, and more.

Head downtown to Centennial Park for a full day of festivities from noon to 10 p.m., including food trucks, live entertainment, the Ultimutts Animal Actors Show, and a paid Moonwalk Entertainment Family Zone. Fireworks over Kempenfelt Bay begin at approximately 10 p.m. (Weather date: July 5).

Also downtown, Open Air Dunlop (presented by the Downtown Barrie BIA) will take over Meridian Place, and Dunlop Street will be closed to vehicles from Maple Avenue to Mulcaster Street for pedestrian-only access to activities, vendors, and live entertainment.

Canada Day affected services and service reminders

The following City services will be affected on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1, 2026:

Barrie Transit will run on a Sunday service schedule, with extended evening service to accommodate the Canada Day fireworks show. The last buses will depart the Downtown Hub (adjacent to 24 Maple Ave.) and the Barrie Allandale Transit Terminal (20 Essa Road) at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Recreation/Community Centres will be closed
City Hall will be closed
The landfill will be closed

Service reminders:

Curbside collection: There will be no change to the waste collection schedule on Wednesday, July 1; curbside collection will occur as regularly scheduled. Visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection for more information on curbside collection services and to look up your collection schedule.

Parking: Downtown parking (on-street and lots) is free on statutory holidays, including July 1. Waterfront parking is enforced 24/7/365. A digital waterfront permit is required for residents to park for free at specific waterfront areas. The Spirit Catcher, Simcoe Street Lot, and North Marina parking lots are “hybrid” lots, with rates consistent with waterfront parking rates (enforced 24/7/365); the waterfront parking permit is not valid in these lots. Fireworks reminder: Residents are permitted to use fireworks on the Canada Day holiday as per the Regulatory Matters By-law (fireworks are only permitted on the holiday). Pesticide use for mosquito control

Between June 15 and October 30, 2026, the City is conducting a larviciding program under the authority of the Local Medical Officer of Health to control larval mosquitoes to prevent their development into carriers of West Nile Virus. Larvicide is applied to municipal-owned catch basins by licensed applicators or supervised technicians. Rear lot catch basins on private property will be treated upon homeowner request and signed consent.

Celebrate Canada’s birthday in Barrie with Canada Day On The Move!

Barrie planting 5,000 new trees to replace those lost in ice storm

The City is moving forward with efforts to restore its urban tree canopy after last year’s ice storm, which destroyed more than 5,000 trees and damaged approximately 46,000 across parks and streets. Supported by a $2.1 million investment, the City has already planted about 1,400 new trees and plans to reach its 5,000-tree replacement goal through continued planting this spring, as well as this fall and spring 2027.

City seeking applicants for Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee

The City is inviting residents to apply for the Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee, an independent body established under the Municipal Elections Act to investigate and adjudicate matters related to municipal election campaign finances. The committee is composed of three citizen members appointed for a four-year term and is responsible for reviewing compliance audit requests and determining whether further investigation is required. The upcoming term will run from November 2026 to November 14, 2030. To be considered, complete the Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee Application and submit it with your resume by Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 4:30 p.m.

Mapleview Drive East closure required for Hewitt’s Creek culvert installation

A full closure of Mapleview Drive East between Chef Lane and Royal Jubilee Drive/Lally Terrace will remain in in place until November 20, 2026, to allow for the installation of the Hewitt’s Creek culvert. Through traffic will be detoured via Yonge Street, Big Bay Point Road, and Prince William Way, while emergency access will be maintained. Barrie Transit routes 12A and 12B will follow a detour and not directly service the Barrie South GO Station; however, a free shuttle will operate on both sides of the closure to maintain access to the station and Maple Ridge Secondary School, running daily with service aligned to train and school schedules. This work is part of planned transportation improvements to support growth to 2031.

Pollinator Week (June 22-28, 2026) is a global celebration supporting pollinator health. A pollinator is anything that transports pollen grains from one flower to another; this includes bees, birds, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, wasps, and beetles. To celebrate Pollinator Week, Barrie residents are encouraged to get involved by submitting a photo of a pollinator through the ‘Pic-a-Pollinator’ online photo contest and attending free activities during the week.

Street Sweeping Update

Spring sweeping is complete. Crews will switch to maintenance sweeping, with arterial/collector roads being swept once per month and residential roads being swept twice more over the summer. The Operations department maintains over 1,600 km of roads and over 600 km of sidewalks throughout Barrie, to ensure safe and enjoyable transportation.

Barrie’s annual road line painting operations are underway

The City of Barrie’s pavement marking contractor has started the annual painting of road lane markings and arrows across Barrie. This includes white lane lines, bike lanes, and yellow centre lines and turning arrows. This work takes place each year to make roads safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Work is expected to continue for approximately six weeks. The painting typically takes place overnight, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Intersection painting, which includes stop bars and crosswalks, will also take place over the next few months and will run until October. Drivers are reminded to obey all posted signs and drive cautiously through active work zones.

For the sixth year, the City’s Brightening Barriers temporary public art exhibition is back, bringing original works of art to patios in Barrie’s downtown. The City of Barrie is inviting owners and operators of heritage buildings, cultural sites, and unique spaces to participate in Doors Open Barrie, taking place on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Part of the province-wide Doors Open Ontario program, the event offers free public access to sites of interest for one day only and helps bring communities together through shared heritage experiences. The City is partnering with Lakehead University to bring a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) university hub to downtown Barrie. Set to open fall 2026, the Barrie STEM Hub’s two downtown locations will be only blocks apart at 24 Maple Avenue and 5 Ross Street, delivering programs in engineering and computer science at the under-graduate and graduate level, growing to approximately 800 students over the next several years. Temporary traffic calming measures could be coming to your neighbourhood!

Traffic calming uses physical measures designed to reduce speeding and encourage safe driving in neighbourhoods. Each spring and summer, seasonal, temporary traffic calming measures —such as speed cushions, flexible bollards, and planters—are installed, then removed in the fall.

Call for artists: Cabinets to Canvas traffic cabinet wraps

The City of Barrie and the Barrie Public Art Committee are inviting Ontario-based artists to submit designs for the Cabinets to Canvas program (formerly Artist Designed Traffic Cabinet Wraps). Part of the City’s Graffiti Abatement Program,, the initiative transforms traffic cabinets with vibrant, community-inspired artwork. Submit your proposal by Friday, May 22, 2026. Spring street sweeping is underway!

The annual spring street sweeping program cleans all City streets of sand deposited during winter road maintenance, and other debris. Spring sweeping always starts in the Source Water Protection Areas of the city (zones 1-9).
