Recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, September 30 with the opportunity for community members to gather, learn and reflect.  Events are being offered in a collaborative effort between the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team of the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC), the Barrie Native Friendship Centre (BNFC), the City of Barrie and the Barrie Public Library.  For details visit barrie.ca/NDTR.

Help keep reusable items out of the landfill by participating in Textile Collection Week. Simply place items (clothing, linens, towels, stuffed toys and shoes) in a labelled bag that says “textiles” (preferably a clear bag, but if you don’t have a clear bag, you can use any type of waterproof plastic bag) and set them at the curb by 7 a.m. on your designated textile collection day the week of October 5. Please note this is not the same as your regular waste collection day.

The City of Barrie is seeking creative submissions for the trophy design of the 8th annual Mayor’s Innovation Awards. The selected artist will receive $1,000, and their design will be fabricated by the Georgian College Makerspace. In Barrie, our drinking water comes from both Lake Simcoe and local groundwater sources. Protecting these sources helps preserve the quality and safety of the city’s drinking water. Have a pool or a hot tub? When emptying it this fall, drain the water across your lawn on a dry, sunny day so that it soaks into the ground and avoids flowing to the storm sewer. Avoid adding chemicals to your pool or hot tub for two weeks before draining.

Eligible electors can now use the City of Barrie’s new Voter Lookup and Registration Portal to confirm they are on the municipal voters list, add themselves to the list, or update their voter information for the 2026 Municipal Election. The secure online portal allows residents to complete the process from the comfort of home and submit acceptable identification when required. Electors who are added to the voters list will receive a Voter Information Letter in late September, which will include their unique voting PIN and instructions on how to vote.

Sports field use reminders

To help keep Barrie’s sports fields safe and in good condition, users must follow the City’s field use regulations:

• All groups and schools must follow the City’s Inclement Weather Policy. Fields should not be used when conditions could cause damage or increase the risk of injury.
• Fields that are closed are clearly signed. Anyone using a closed field may be responsible for repair costs if damage occurs. The City may close fields at any time due to safety concerns, overuse, or wet conditions.
• Sports fields may only be used for their intended purpose. Vehicles are not permitted in city parks. 
• Baseball players are asked to respect neighbouring homes and private property. Repeatedly hitting balls into nearby yards intentionally may result in loss of access to the facility.
• Parks staff and By-law Enforcement officers monitor fields to ensure regulations are followed.

Award categories include Pivot Point, Creative Collaboration, Research & Innovation Contribution, Youth Innovator, Shift Disturber, and Municipal Innovation. Barrie businesses, organizations, groups, and individuals of all sizes and sectors are encouraged to apply. Nominations close November 18, 2026. Winners will be selected by independent judging panels and recognized at an awards ceremony in spring 2027.

The City of Barrie celebrates the completion of the Lakehead University Barrie STEM Hub 

The City of Barrie and Lakehead University recently celebrated the completion of the new Lakehead University Barrie STEM Hub, a major investment in education and economic growth in downtown Barrie. The Barrie STEM Hub is a multi-site facility with two locations: 24 Maple Avenue and 5 Ross Street. The STEM Hub will provide hands-on education in engineering, mechatronics, and computer science at the undergraduate and graduate levels, enabling students to learn locally for in-demand careers and supplying industry with skilled talent. Lakehead University will welcome the inaugural Barrie STEM Hub class on September 8, 2026.

Secure Your Spot: Fall Recreation Registration Opens August 25

The City of Barrie offers hundreds of programs for all ages and abilities, including fitness classes, swimming lessons, skating programs, arts activities, and family-friendly recreation opportunities.

Resident registration opens August 25, followed by non-resident registration on September 1. Popular programs fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged at play.barrie.ca. Eligible Barrie residents can also apply for fee assistance through the RecACCESS program, which helps make recreation programs more affordable.

Civic Holiday weekend affected services and reminders

The following City of Barrie services will be affected on the Civic Holiday, Monday, August 3: 

• City Hall will be closed.
• Recreation/Community Centres will be closed.  
• Barrie Transit will run on a Sunday service schedule on Monday, August 3. Barrie Transit is offering free Kempenfest shuttle service from July 31 to August 3. 
• The Tiffin Boat Launch will be closed July 31 to August 3 due to Kempenfest (the upper section will be open for accessible parking by permit only). A public boat launch is available at the City’s marina (limited trailer parking). 

Service reminders:

• Curbside Collection: There will be no change to the waste collection schedule on Monday, August 3; curbside collection will occur as regularly scheduled. Visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection for more information on curbside collection services and to look up your collection schedule. 
• Parking: Downtown parking (on-street and lots) is enforced on the Civic Holiday. Waterfront parking, and parking in the hybrid and marina lots, is enforced 24/7/365. To park free in select waterfront areas, vehicles must be registered with a digital waterfront parking permit. Residents and visitors are advised that some waterfront parking lots will be closed on various days throughout the holiday weekend to accommodate Kempenfest; visit barrie.ca/parking for the Kempenfest parking map and other parking information. 
• Fireworks: Fireworks are not permitted on the Civic Holiday or surrounding days, as per the Regulatory Matters By-law.
• Beaches: Residents and visitors are reminded that tents and sunshades are not allowed at waterfront beaches and parks unless they have no more than one pole and one wall or side, to allow for clear sightlines and safety. Visit barrie.ca/beaches for more beach use guidelines.

Tree Watering Bag pick-up days on August 1

Residents who received a new boulevard tree in 2025 or 2026 as part of the City’s replanting efforts following last year’s ice storm can pick up a free tree watering bag to help their tree thrive. The City will distribute watering bags at Sunnidale Park (265 Sunnidale Road) on Saturday, August 1from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You can contact Service Barrie if you can’t make it to the pick-up event. Residents must provide their address to confirm eligibility, and supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while quantities last.

City resurfacing more than 18 km of roads in 2026

The City of Barrie is investing in safer, smoother roads through its annual Pavement Management Program, with approximately 18.4 kilometres of roadway scheduled for resurfacing in 2026. Road resurfacing helps address surface issues such as cracking and deterioration, extending the life of existing infrastructure and reducing the need for more costly repairs in the future. Several projects are already complete or nearing completion, including sections of Bayfield Street, Clapperton Street, Collier Street and Ross Street downtown, as well as Bayview Drive between Mapleview Drive and Lockhart Road. Additional resurfacing work will continue throughout the construction season in neighbourhoods across Barrie, including the Cundles area, downtown, Letitia Heights and south Barrie.
